Impressed with Elizabeth Warren on Impeachment

It was from an email I received yesterday that Elizabeth Warren sent to her list that I learned of her call for impeachment.

She impressed me with how succinctly she captured the clear grounds for impeaching this president. The essence of the case against Trump was laid out in three interconnected pieces, thus:

"The Mueller report lays out facts showing that a hostile foreign government attacked our 2016 election to help Donald Trump and Donald Trump welcomed that help. Once elected, Donald Trump obstructed the investigation into that attack."

Senator Warren went on to make clear the stakes in whether this extremely serious presidential misconduct is allowed to pass, or whether the Congress makes use of the constitutional remedies for dealing with a lawless President.

"To ignore a president's repeated efforts to obstruct an investigation into his own disloyal behavior would inflict great and lasting damage on this country, and it would suggest that both the current and future presidents would be free to abuse their power in similar ways."

Later, on the Rachel Maddow show, she was asked whether she'd still want to go forward with impeachment if she knew that the Senate would fail to remove Trump even if he were impeached in the House. And she was clear in her affirmative answer: this is beyond politics, it's a point of principle.

The polls indicate that Senator Warren is back in the pack among candidates for the Democratic nomination for the presidency. I don't know that she should be the nominee. But I do want to say that there is about her a moral and intellectual clarity -- and a courageous quality --  that impresses me. And that I'd like to see in a President coming in to help repair the damage of a Trump presidency.
