Democrats Should Dub Trump that "Wrecking-Ball President": It Focuses Attention on the Damage

Most all of what’s worst about having the powers of the presidency in Donald Trump’s hands has to do with the damage he is doing to the country, in countless ways.

I believe I know what I’m talking about when I say that most people, when they see something like Donald Trump acting as he does, have a picture of what’s happening in which the idea of “damage” does not adequately appear. That requires thinking more about the web of cause and effect than most people, from my experience, give to the world around them.

It would be useful, therefore, to direct people’s attention to the damage that Donald Trump is doing. Putting the phrase “the Wrecking-Ball President” out there would be one way of doing that. It pushes one to think about the damage he’s doing as one beholds

when he corrupts the integrity of the law when he botches the coronavirus challenge when he breaks our friendships with traditional allies when he rips children from their parents at the southern border when he acts to prevent responsible action on climate change.

The idea of the “wrecking-ball presidency” will make it more likely that people will see the costs of having Trump in the presidency, and will vote to get him out of office.
