Doubtless, the immediate public statement from presumptive-Democratic-nominee-for-President, Joe Biden, must be a well-crafted acknowledgment of Bernie Sanders’ official withdrawal from the race, with a suitably gracious salute to Sanders and a suitable call for unity in a common cause to take the powers of the presidency away from Donald Trump, etc.
But Biden must also address — and in a timely way, while the issue is still in the headlines -- the ongoing assault by Donald Trump on Inspectors General across the government. And for that, I’d advocate something along these lines:
”If I’m elected President, I will act to fortify the role of Inspector General— an extremely important part of the American system to protect the integrity of our government.
“Unlike Donald Trump, I believe strongly in the importance of holding our government officials accountable. The President of the United States most of all.
[Then follows a brief portrait of President Trump’s recent efforts to disable the Inspectors General in one department after another. These efforts can be connected with his refusal to cooperate with Congress in its exercise of its legitimate — and vital — oversight function. And he could also quote former Justice Department Inspector General, Michael Bromwich, saying: “This is a president that resists any form of oversight.”]
“Unlike Donald Trump, I believe the interests of the people are paramount, and the President is there to serve them; not that the interests of the people should be sacrificed for the interests of the President.
“The American people should be assured, I will undo the damage that Donald Trump is doing to our system in general, and specifically I will welcome every legitimate attempt to examine what my administration is doing, and to hold me accountable.”
