I’m looking for words for the Democrats to use to prepare the way for the strong measures the Democrats have talked about pushing through, if they get the Presidency and the Senate, like: 1) adding seats to the Court and 2) adding DC and Puerto Rico as states.
I favor the Democrats acting with that sort of strength and boldness.
When the integrity of American democracy is at stake, hardball must be met by hardball.
But to succeed in political terms, those bold moves must be supported by the majority of American people, and that requires that they perceive the Democrats’ bold moves as a means of righting a previous wrong.
That connection must begin now, before the Democrats do their deeds, so that when the Republicans act, they see the Republican actions as wrong (a 62% majority oppose it), and are already looking ahead to the Democrats’ bold actions as a just response to what the Republicans are doing with this newly vacated Supreme Court seat.
This is one possible way of articulating that picture— the “ill-gotten gains” the Republicans are about to seize, with their “power grab,” and the wrong that the bold Democratic moves will seeking to right with their new powers.
