In America today there are signs of something that’s been gathering strength among the people of the United States – it’s a spirit that motivates Americans to want to get Donald Trump out of the Presidency.
The breadth (and constancy) of this spirit has been increasingly impressive.
But now we have additional signs of its intensity:
- so many Americans willing to spend so many hours in line to vote in the Election of 2020, and
- so many people -- who fear what Trump might do to the American future if he were re-elected – volunteering to make calls, fill postcards, provide transformation, raise funds. (I’ve never seen such levels of active participation in a campaign.)
In this determination to vote, no matter the length of the line, and in this eagerness to work to assure that it is Joe Biden, and not — dear God! -- Donald Trump, who gets sworn in as President in January, we can see a depth of passion has been aroused in the hearts of a wide swath of the citizens of this nation.
Clearly, a lot of Americans care deeply about the stakes in this race— which involve a whole constellation of values that Americans have traditionally praised. Regarding these important American values, Trump and Biden represent — to an extraordinary degree — complete opposites:
- decent or not decent;
- honest or not honest;
- unifying or divisive;
- respecting the rule of law or lawless;
- kind and caring, or cruel and completely indifferent to the well-being of others. (Etc.)
A substantial majority of the American people -- in their working to choose the good side of these options -- are manifesting what I’ll call “a spirit.” And as the election approaches, this spirit is already showing itself to be powerful.
In the way this American majority is “inspired,” we all should find inspiration. The rise of this spirit is expressing what’s best in America, and the power it is manifesting looks promising to lift our nation out of this time of Trumpian darkness.
Finally, Donald Trump — having turned back the Mueller Report, and having survived his Impeachment — may now come up against something that will not yield, will not let him get away with it any more.
