The Republican Party has for years worked to keep Americans at each other’s throats. It’s all part of a Divide and Conquer strategy:
- whip people up with falsehoods and distortions to make them think that the Good depends on issues that are quite apart from what’s really going on in society — which is that the plutocracy is gathering still more of the nation’s power and wealth to itself, at the expense of the people.
- keep the people so divided that they cannot come together to pursue the goals and values that they share.
- and deal with those peripheral issues in a way that will inflame the conflict and keep it going in perpetuity.
