Maybe it’s just me. Or maybe my professional background in interpreting cultural expressions for hidden meanings has enabled me to sniff out that something more than just an “Eclipse” is being made of this celestial by the collective response of the nation.
Perhaps my response to the eclipse is stunted. I do marvel at the precision of the scientific calculations that have obviously been made. And it is meaningful to envision how the sun and the earth and the moon are all hanging out in space moving in predictable ways, which occasionally line these balls up in a straight line.
But when I look at all that Americans have been doing and saying about the eclipse, I wonder if this has been turned into a spiritually important collective experience.
And if that’s so, it raises the question, “What is Being Expressed here? And Why?”
