I speak here as one who has been pretty aware of Israel for more than 70 years, and following its politics for more than half a century. And I speak as an American Jew who grew up taking pride in the achievements and democratic qualities of the Jewish state, and who now feels ashamed of the stain Israel has brought upon itself with its actions (actions not only wrong but ultimately foolish). It pains me.
A review of the history shows a variety of forces that — over the decades -- have led a nation with so much going for it, that has shown such admirable virtues, to this ugly moment.
