Why the Well-Being of Women Requires Men to Keep it to Themselves: About “Consent” (VIDEO and Text)

Over the course of the history of civilization, one of the 'rights' that men have asserted, that that have hurt women profoundly, has been the right to impose their sexual thoughts and feelings and urges upon women.

Women have the right to be protected from such sexual imposition. And that's what our recent cultural development of an ethic of "consent" rightfully addresses.

A more polished — written -- version of these ideas is to be found here.  (That piece will be my weekly op/ed this week in newspapers in the very red congressional district in which — in 2012 — I was the Democratic nominee for Congress.)

In the video, I also refer to my piece, "The Sacred Space of Lovers," which presents one ideal of the relationship between men and women.

I also refer to the way the rise of civilization -- which inevitably generated a "war of all against all" among civilized societies (a new kind of life-form -- imposed on the human male some injurious challenges. And how these injuries injected some "pathologies of power" into the relationships between men and women in civilized societies.

(How the inevitable dynamics of civilization’s development inflicted such wounds on the human world is discussed in a section — titled "Damaged in the Male" — of my book OUT OF WEAKNESS: HEALING THE WOUNDS THAT DRIVE US TO WAR.)
