I study the data as it gets reported. Sure looks to me like things are fairly clearly moving toward a Harris victory over Donald Trump, and by more than a razor-thin margin. But then I look at how things are getting presented in the media and things look much more worrisome.
(I am nowadays less likely to subject myself to the front page of the New York Times, because it tends to make me feel more stressed by saying the chances of catastrophe are greater than I’ve happily come to believe.)
Two possibilities: 1) that — with my favorable reading of what’s happening in the American electorate — I’m fooling myself; or 2) the favorable movement I perceive is really there, the probability of victory has indeed become more reassuring, but for some reason, the press is failing to tell it like it is.
Why would that be?
The most laudable reason is that they don’t want anyone to let up the effort: the effort must be part of the equation of victory. Continuing to make it seem like we’re close to some “tipping point” helps motivate people to “leave it all on the field.”
Or is it about keeping the audience glued with the drama of a “close game.”
I can’t imagine any reason the press wouldn’t be happy to chronicle what’s happening now in America, with the power of mere decency is reasserting itself against the crude, ugly, and cruel indecency of Donald Trump.
I invite you to check out my website, abetterhumanstory.org. An integrated picture that runs from the immediate (the political battle in America right now) to the overall story of the human species, and the challenges we face if we are to survive on this planet for the long haul, rather than self-destruct as we very possibly might do.
